Intervention by India during Handover Ceremony for the Chair of the Group of 77 and China, delivered by Mr. Gaurav Kumar Thakur, Counsellor, Permanent Mission of India, Geneva, 15 January 2026

Thank you, Madam Chair.

Wishing everyone a happy new year 2026.

First of all, my delegation would like to express our sincere appreciation to Ambassador Chuquihuara for his exemplary stewardship of the Group of 77 over the past year. His leadership and dedication and that of the colleagues from the Permanent Mission of Peru have been instrumental in navigating our Group through an especially important period.

Every four years marks a special milestone, and 2025 was no exception. Under the able chairmanship of Ambassador Chuquihuara, and most effective coordination by our dear colleagues Ms. Alison Urquizo, we collectively achieved the Geneva Consensus, a landmark outcome that reflects our shared commitment to development and solidarity.

Coordinating a group as large and diverse as ours is never an easy task. Yet, through effective collaboration under the thoughtful guidance and tireless by Amb Chiquihera, demonstrated remarkable unity during the recently concluded Ministerial meeting.

We also warmly congratulate you Ambassador Fancy Chepkemoi Too, the Premanent Representative of Kenya on assuming the Chair of the G77 and China. We are confident that under your leadership, the Group will continue to champion the interests of the developing world with unity and purpose.

Looking ahead, my delegation stands ready to work closely with you madam Chair, your team, and with all other members of G77 and China, to further strengthen the group’s role in advancing the development agenda and work on the mandate obtained at the Geneva Consensus.

Thank you.
