Statement by India in Panel discussion on ‘Human rights and a Culture of Peace’, at the 61st Session of the Human Rights Council (23 February – 03 April 2026), Permanent Mission of India, Geneva, 04 March 2026.

Mr. President,

India reaffirms its steadfast commitment to promoting human rights and advancing a culture of peace, as reflected in Human Rights Council resolution 55/17 adopted at its 55th session. Guided by the UN Charter, the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, and the Declaration and Programme of Action on a Culture of Peace, the resolution affirms that peace, development, and human rights are interdependent and mutually reinforcing pillars of global well-being.

  1. Rooted in the ancient ethos of Vasudhaiva Kutumbakam, the world is but one family, India views a culture of peace as grounded in non-violence, tolerance, dialogue, and respect for diversity, essential for realizing all human rights. India has consistently upheld these principles, from contributing to the shaping of the Universal Declaration in 1948 to its election to the Human Rights Council for 2026.
  1. We actively promote peace education, gender equality, youth participation, and sustainable development, aligned with the SDGs, while addressing challenges such as hate speech, disinformation, and conflict. We invest in early childhood education to foster non-violence and support the vital role of civil society, including women- and youth-led initiatives. National efforts such as the National Education Policy 2020, (Educate Daughters Campaign) Beti Bachao Beti Padhao, and MY Bharat advance these objectives.

Mr. President,

  1. Lasting peace requires confronting terrorism, cross-border threats, and religious hatred without selectivity. India urges all States to implement a culture of peace through national policies, international cooperation, and human rights education.

Thank you.
