Statement by India under Agenda Item 2: Interactive dialogue on the Oral Update of the High Commissioner on the situation of human rights in Myanmar at the 61st Session of the Human Rights Council (23 February – 31 March 2026) delivered by Mr. Kshitij Tyagi, Counsellor, Permanent Mission of India, Geneva, 27 February 2026

Madam Vice President,

We thank the Assistant Secretary General for the oral update. We have repeatedly expressed concern in the Council over the deteriorating humanitarian and security situation in Myanmar and have consistently called for immediate cessation of violence, release of political detainees, provision of humanitarian assistance, and restoration of normalcy. We reiterate our call today as an immediate neighbour and a friend of the people of Myanmar, and continue to accord the highest priority to the restoration of peace and stability there. We remain concerned over the impact that this precarious situation has had along our shared border in the form of influx of thousands of persons into our North Eastern states as well as an increase in transnational crimes of drugs and human trafficking.

2. India remains steadfast in its support to Myanmar’s transition towards inclusive federal democracy, and to the need for arriving at peaceful solutions that are Myanmar-led and Myanmar-owned.

3. Whether it is humanitarian assistance as a first responder during natural disasters, or supporting infrastructure development - India has consistently prioritized people-centric initiatives, not just as a neighbour but as a development partner of Myanmar.

4. We, therefore, call on the international community to work together to support the people of Myanmar and facilitate a return to peace. We continue to coordinate closely with ASEAN under the Five-Point Consensus, while supporting the UN Secretary-General's efforts in this regard.

Thank you.
