Statement by India during the 4th Universal Periodic Review (UPR) of Sao Tome and Principe at the 51st Session of UPR Working Group, delivered by Sudheer K.J., First Secretary, Permanent Mission of India Geneva, 27 January 2026

Mr. President,

India warmly welcomes the delegation of Sao Tome and Principe and thanks them for their presentation.

2. India appreciates various legislative and policy measures taken by Sao Tome and Principe towards strengthening human rights in the country. In Particular, we appreciate the efforts made towards establishment of the National Human Rights Commission in their country.

3. In the spirit of constructive cooperation, India recommends the following to Sao Tome and Principe:

First, take further steps in expediting its efforts to make the National Human Rights Commission functional;

Second, consider becoming party to the following instruments: 

  1. a) Optional Protocol to the Convention on the Rights of the Child on the involvement of children in armed conflict; and 
  2. b) The Optional Protocol on the sale of children, child prostitution and child pornography.

4. We convey our best wishes to the delegation of Sao Tome and Principe.
