Intervention by India at the 51st session of the Universal Periodic Review Working Group (19-30 January 2026): 4th UPR of Nepal, delivered by Ambassador Arindam Bagchi, Permanent Representative of India to the UN, Permanent Mission of India, Geneva, 21 January 2026

Mr. Vice President,

My delegation thanks the delegation of Nepal for the presentation of their national report. We note measures taken to implement the recommendations made by India and accepted by Nepal in its 3rd UPR.

2. We welcome the implementation of the decision to have reservation for women in the Federal Parliament, Provincial Assembly and at the local levels. We also commend implementation of Contributions-based Social Security Act, 2017, which extends social security to the informal sector workers and self-employed persons.

3. In the spirit of constructive cooperation, India recommends the following to Nepal:

First, strengthen National Women Commission, including by increasing cooperation with local authorities and civil society.

Second, continue long term anti-poverty action plan, that focuses on increasing employment opportunities and providing vocational training across all sections of society.

And third, continue its efforts to combat all forms of gender-based violence and discrimination against women.

4. We wish a successful Universal Periodic Review to the delegation of Nepal.

Thank you.
