Statement by India during the 4th Universal Periodic Review (UPR) of Nauru at the 51st Session of UPR Working Group, delivered by Sudheer K.J., First Secretary, Permanent Mission of India Geneva, 20 January 2026

Mr. President,

India warmly welcomes the delegation of Nauru and thanks them for their presentation.

  1. We appreciate the adoption of the 2025–2030 National Gender Equality Policy and Action Plan, reflecting Nauru’s commitment to advancing gender equality and social protection. We also welcome the 2023 Persons with Disabilities Act, an important step in safeguarding the rights and dignity of persons with disabilities. We appreciate the enactment of the Health and Medical Services Act 2025 and the Pharmacy Act 2025, aiming to strengthen and imporve delivery of helath services to Nauruans. We remain committed to engaging with Nauru to enhance the response capacity of Nauru's public service delivery systems, especially public healthcare.
  1. In the spirit of constructive cooperation, India recommends the following to Nauru:

(i) Consider establishing a sustainable National Human Rights Institution in accordance with the Paris Principles.

(ii) Consider acceding to the core international human rights treaties.

(iii) In the context of the centrality of good governance especially for democratic polity & societies, consider steps to establish right to information framework, including through legislation.

(iv) Consider targeted measures for child development including those related to establishing a minimum age for employment.
