Permanent Mission of India

Geneva, 08 September 2025

Mr. President,

We have taken note of the reports presented today.

At the outset, we extend our heartfelt condolences at the loss of lives in the devastating earthquake in Kunar and Nangarhar provinces. As part of our commitment to provide humanitarian assistance, India has immediately dispatched relief materials including, 1000 family tents, 15 tons of food material and 21 tons of other essential items like medicines, blankets, hygiene kits, generators etc. Further relief material is on way. India stands by the people of Afghanistan at this difficult time.

As its contiguous neighbour, civilizational partner and a long-standing stakeholder in its development, India closely monitors the developments in Afghanistan. Our immediate priorities include providing humanitarian assistance, capacity building and support the developmental needs of the Afghan people.

Since August 2021, India has delivered around 50,000 tons of wheat, more than 330 tons of medicines, and vaccines, 40,000 litres of pesticide and 95 tons of other social support items, including winter wear and stationery items for school children and earthquake relief material. Alongside material aid, we’ve empowered Afghan youth through educational scholarships, admitting over 2000 students—including nearly 600 girls—to pursue higher education in India, with thousands more studying online.

As Afghanistan’s largest regional developmental partner, we also work constructively with UNWFP, UNODC and other UN agencies and appreciate their invaluable role.

Mr. President,

India remains steadfast in its commitment to the friendly people of Afghanistan. India looks forward to continue working closely with all stakeholders in supporting the Afghan society in their quest for peace, stability, development and prosperity.

Thank you.
