Statement by India on “ Elimination of Nuclear Weapons” at  the 78th Session of World Health Assembly (WHA 78) delivered by Ms. Anupama Singh, First Secretary, Permanent Mission of India

Geneva, 27 May 2025

Madam Chair,

India reaffirms that the highest global priority must remain the complete elimination of nuclear weapons, as outlined in SSOD-1.  As a nuclear-weapon state, India remains firmly committed to universal, non-discriminatory, and verifiable nuclear disarmament, achievable through a step-by-step, inclusive, and equitable multilateral framework.

While sharing deep concern over the catastrophic health consequences emanating from nuclear war, - a concern reflected in our consistent positions at the First Committee – India believes this issue is best addressed through relevant disarmament forums.

We are neither convinced of the added value of initiating another study on this subject, nor of WHO being the relevant forum.  We therefore, abstained on the draft Resolution A78/A/CONF./1 on the Effects of Nuclear War on Public Health.

Thank you.
