Statement by India at the Universal Periodic Review (UPR) Working Group 49th Session (28 April – 9 May 2025) : 4th UPR of Kiribati – Statement delivered by Mr. Kshitij Tyagi, Counsellor, Permanent Mission of India, Geneva, 28 April 2025

Mr. President,

India warmly welcomes the delegation of Kiribati. We appreciate the various public policies and plans implemented by Kiribati in the follow-up to the last UPR recommendations.

  1.   We acknowledge the challenge posed to Kiribati due to impacts of climate change and rise in sea-level. We laud the measures being taken on mitigating climate change and adaptation plans, including through initiating a ‘coalition of nations’ most vulnerable to climate change.
  1.       In the spirit of constructive engagement, we recommend the following to Kiribati:

One, consider ratifying the International Covenant on the Economic, Social and Cultural Rights (ICESCR) and the International Covenant on the Civil and Political Rights (ICCPR).

Two,  continue taking measures for effective promotion of gender equality and elimination of discrimination against women.

And three,  continue taking efforts to secure support and assistance from the international community in pursuing climate change adaptation and mitigation plans.

  1.       We wish Kiribati a successful UPR review.

Thank you
